Grades 3 - 4
.

Fantastic things are happening in grade 3-4 this new school year.

We have 16 students with only one new grade 3.  We welcome Samuel.

In Social Studies we are learning about Life Skills.  Knowing what they look like in our classroom, in our home and in our community, students have been actively demonstrating these lifeskills.  For the lifeskill of caring in our community, we participated in a program called “Socks in a Box” which we gave to a group called Street Ministries sponsored by ADRA our Adventist Disaster Relief Agency.  We brought in 80 pairs of socks that will keep the homeless a little warmer this winter.  For the lifeskill of cooperation, each student brought a fruit and we combined our donations and had fruit salad for snack.  For the lifeskill of Common Sense, we created slogans like “Common Sense in the House”, and “Do the Right Thing” and wrote them with fabric paint on T-shirts.  Students wore their shirts with pride, another lifeskill we will review in the future.  Students are learning how to practice Mutual Respect and we are getting along famously.

In Science we are studying about Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling.  We decided to have a Garbage Swap where everyone brought items from home they did not want anymore.  Then they were given time to swap and each exchange was something new and exciting for them.  We were very grateful to helpers who brought in compost and allowed us to sift through biodegrading material and found several decomposers.  We learned that if more people would have worm bins there would be less garbage going into our landfills.  We are the waiting list to have an Agriculturalist bring in their red wrigglers for us to observe.   Science is hands on and we’re enjoying this subject a lot.

Our elementary student association chose their student council and Den Rose ran for the office of Class Representative for grade 3 & 4 and won.  We congratulate you Den Rose!

Thursday, September 10, was Parent Information Night.  A big thank you to those parents who were able to come out to meet & greet the teacher.  Communication is a big key to your child’s success this year.

Fun Day was Tuesday, September 22 and we all got on a bus and went to the Edmonton Corn Maze.  It was fun finding the ten posts using the clues provided.  Kids enjoyed playing on the hay bails and riding on the 3 wheel tricycles as well.  It was nice to enjoy the last few days of summer.

We are beginning our CTBS (Canadian Testing of Basic Skills) tests this week and using a Lifelong Guideline called Personal Best I have every confidence that my students will do well.

I am thrilled to have these precious souls in my care as I educate them for this earth and the Heavenly Kingdom to come.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Hetland
